I always wanted a dog. As a teenager I walked dogs in the neighbourhood and talked to many on the way to and from school. In my early 20's I purchased my first Irish Setter, Zahn - I was hooked on; Irish that is. Later, I showed, bred, and field trialled Irish Setters and commenced Show Judging Gundogs, working towards Toys when my personal circumstances changed and I dropped out of the dog show world. When my son, Liam, was born, my last Irish Setter, Arthur was 2 years old. We moved to Nelson, retired Arthur's mum Primrose with my Dad, Harry, and Liam grew up with his 'brother' Arthur. Arthur passed away, we had a short break without a dog. Our friend Ron often left his beautiful girl Stella stay with us, so we have never really been without a dog. Next minute, Ron brought Dixie out from Australia just before her 8th birthday and Ron passed away a month later - thanks for the gift Ron - he ensured we were not without a dog - Stella and Dixie have been friends ever since. Stella lives with a lovely family and comes regularly for grooms at Dixie's.

Since opening Dixie's I've received wonderful support for the local and out of town doggie community as well as support from other Master Groomers throughout the country with special mention of Verna Holland, Master Groomer, Rangiora. A special thanks to my lovely clients who have allowed me to be creative and try something different as well as providing practice dogs for my Master Groomers qualification. I am very grateful for their trust and support.

Both Stella and Dixie were orginally groomed by Shirley McEwan owner/groomer at Paws R Precious and through this relationship, and wanting a professional change, I made the move to train under Shirley and completed her 500 hour course. Shirley's training was comprehensive and meticulous. Shirley had done her training at The Paragon Dog Grooming Academy in America. She taught me excellent basics from prep work to bathing and blow drying, then clippering and scissor work. Shirley taught Breed Standard and Pet Grooming. After I finished the course I continued to work at Paws R Precious for another year. I upskilled myself and continue to do so through the National Dog Groomers Assn Seminars, Workshops, Bootcamps, Groomalongs and Exams.

As a groomer, I'm up close and personal with your pet - it's a close relationship and it is so important we communicate well - I love my job!
